Green Bottle Caps
The other day I was at a supermarket and saw some Dasani water bottles in a cooler with green caps. I went home, researched it and found out that this "plant bottle" is made up of 30% plants and still recyclable. This renewable plant-based material replaces non-renewable resources used in plastic. Find out more on their website.
Recycle Candy Wrappers?
Recently I saw something interesting on television.
Look closely at the green box.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a better picture.
Now you can recycle your candy and chocolate wrappers at the movie theater. Well actually not here in Edmonton yet. I checked the movie theater today. But soon, hopefully. According to the link above, only 5 theaters in Toronto. Theremight be some in Vancouver, not too sure. I hope this spreads through Canada and the world. The plastic from the recycled wrappers can be melted. then used to make plastic bags, garbage cans, watering cans, etc. So re-use of plastic. Good for the environment. Less plastic = less garbage = a greener Earth :)

What Have I Done So Far? (2)
I have decided to split these "What Have I Done So Far?" posts into maybe one post per week instead of stuffing them all into the first post.
-A few days ago some plastic zipper bags were purchased in my household.
As you may have noticed (or may not) it is the one zipper type instead of the two zipper type. Now this is a tiny tiny change and I don't even know if these really use less plastic but I'm pretty sure it does...
It would be way better just not using plastic bags in general but, small steps at a time.
-Large yogurt container instead of many smaller ones.
Also with this one I'm not sure if the large container really does use less plastic. I mean like the large container has thicker container so does that contain more plastic than all the small containers put together? With the same amount of yogurt (650g)of course.
-NO paper used these last two weeks
Since its Christmas break and there was no written homework (and I am too lazy to start my Chinese book report) I used no paper this past two weeks.
*NOTE: I took both these pictures :) I'm going to try to do this more often so there are no copyright issues

Packaging
First, MERRY CHRISTMAS. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas filled with joy and unfortunately, no snow.
Yesterday I went to "a large shop that sold food" (food as like a restaurant) for breakfast. They have these tiny packages of salt that have maybe two pinches of salt in it. A lot of paper is used to package these. Can't they just use salt shakers? You can refill them from big packages so a lot of paper is saved.

How is Waste Dealt With?
Here are some of the ways waste is dealt with:
(compacted waste)
-Landfill:
Disposing of waste by burying it. Some old fashioned landfills can be unsafe (windblown trash, leakage, pests: eg. rats). Most of the landfills from today are covered in a layer of clay or plastic before placing trash. The garbage is compacted to save room. Many landfills now also have gas extraction. Gas is pumped out of the landfill and used to produce electricity. <-- didn't know that before
-Energy Recovery:
Using waste as fuel. (eg. boilers and turbines)
-Incineration:
Burning waste. Turns into ash, gases, heat and steam. Produces pollution.
-Resource Recovery:
Known as recycling and re-using. (eg. melting plastic and shaping into something else like playground equipment)
-Avoidance and/or Reduction:
Making no/less garbage in first place. <-- smart

What Have I Done So Far?
Here's my short and pitiful list of how I have produced less trash this last three days: -3 less plastic grocery bags (from grocery shopping) -around 15 paper towels (from using towels when washing hands and wiping up spills) -3 sheets of paper (from NOT DOING MY HOMEWORK! *just kidding* actually from doing homework on less paper) <-- *involves cramped writing* -quite a few smaller plastic bags (from telling my mom to put my lunch in a reusable bag instead) **this affects the future too so a LOT of plastic bags December 21, 2011 UPDATED -3 less sheets of paper -quite a lot of paper towels (from telling my dad to use a cloth to wash the windows instead) Paper towels are bought, used, then trashed. Waste of money, bad for the environment. Use towels instead. Next, I will attempt to convince my dad to bring a reusable cup when buying coffee to save many paper cups. December 22, 2011 |
One of My Idols
One of my idols in this whole producing less trash project is my grandpa. He is really environmentally friendly. Although it might just be because he wants to save money... I'm not too sure. But anyways, here are some ways he cuts back on producing waste.
-Not using paper towels to dry hands:
When my grandpa washes his hands, he "air dries" it <-- *involves lots of flinging and flying water droplets* instead of using paper towels OR dryers (not wasting paper towels AND electricity).
-Using paper to the max:
My grandpa doesn't trash or recycle papers that much. Instead he collects the papers that still have space for writing in a pile and re-uses them. Amazing right? Now compare to me.
Take a look at all the paper in my binders:
(going to take a picture tomorrow, hope I remember)
(oops I forgot, one day I will remember... seriously)
(seriously I think I might never get to this...)
Where do you think it goes at the end of the year?
Or maybe:
Happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR for like, pretty much every student. That's a lot of paper.
-Finishing ALL food:
My grandpa does not approve of wasting food. That includes every single crumb.
And lastly:
-Taking public transit:
This one doesn't relate to my project. Just thought I should mention it.Since my grandpa doesn't live in the city, there are probably many more ways he cuts back on producing trash that I don't know of.
